Mari Boine has become one of my favorite vocalists from around the world. The rhythms of music and melody join a style that is at once like many modern folk vocals and yet is quite unique in that it maintains a tradition of “Finnish joik” that sounds less surreal and electronic than Wimme, for example, yet not constricted in tradition that would make it sound like an ethnographic sampling. The beat is deep and her voice is rich, strong, beautiful, yet simple in some ways.
